The Staff Nurse promotes the achievement of an acceptable level of self care for patients and their families. Duties include: assisting with physician clinics, colposcopy clinics, administering chemotherapy, assisting in the management and treatment of side effects of chemotherapy, symptom control, emotional support, education, rehabilitation, cancer prevention and early detection. The nurse works closely with all members of the health care team to provide safe, comprehensive and individualized care. Where appropriate, the Staff Nurse practices within a system of primary nursing and evidence based practice. |
| Duties & Responsibilities |
As a team member, and within a system of primary nursing, the nurse provides assistance to patients and their families in the following areas:
- nursing assessment of cancer patients
- support to physician clinics for new and follow-up patients.
- chemotherapy treatments and supportive treatments/procedures
- support to Colposcopy clinics, including assistance with procedures and patient teaching
- patient and family teaching in all aspects of cancer and cancer care
- emotional support to patients, families, and team members
- involvement in clinical trials
- activities related to cancer detection and prevention

| Qualifications |

Graduate of a recognized school of nursing. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred.

Completion of an oncology nursing program preferred. Within 2 years of employment at this Cancer Centre, the Staff Nurse without this program will enroll in the ONDEC program or other acceptable program of this nature.
- Must demonstrate a keen interest in all aspects of Oncology nursing. Oncology nursing experience preferred.
- Paediatric nursing experience and current general medical-surgical nursing of the adult will be assets.
- Must demonstrate good communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
- Must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary team and an ability to work independently
- Must have current CARNA membership and BLS certification
- Excellent venipuncture and related IV skills (peripheral and central venous access)
- Familiarity in the use of IV Infusion pumps, post-a-caths, Central venous lines, Home infusion pumps
- Computer literacy and keyboarding skills.
