What Is The Express Entry System For Permanent Residency?

What is the Express Entry system for permanent residency?

The Express Entry system is a points-based immigration system used by the Canadian government to manage and select candidates for permanent residency in Canada. It was introduced in January 2015 to streamline the selection process for three of Canada’s key economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Here’s how the Express Entry system works:

  1. Eligibility Assessment: Candidates interested in immigrating to Canada through Express Entry must first determine if they meet the eligibility criteria for one of the three federal economic programs. Key factors include age, education, work experience, language proficiency in English or French, and adaptability.
  2. Expression of Interest (EOI): Eligible candidates create an online profile in the Express Entry system. This profile includes details about their education, work experience, language skills, and other qualifications. Based on the information provided, candidates are assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
  3. Ranking and Draws: Regular Express Entry draws, typically held every two weeks, invite the highest-scoring candidates to apply for permanent residency. The CRS score is the primary determinant in these draws. Additional points may be awarded for factors such as a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, provincial nomination, or Canadian study experience.
  4. Invitation to Apply (ITA): Candidates who receive an ITA have the opportunity to submit a complete application for permanent residency within a specified time frame, usually 60 days. This includes providing supporting documents and paying the required fees.
  5. Application Review: Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reviews the submitted applications to ensure they meet all eligibility requirements and criteria. This includes medical and criminal background checks.
  6. Permanent Residency: If the application is approved, candidates are issued permanent resident visas, allowing them to live and work anywhere in Canada. They must land in Canada within a specific time frame, typically 12 months from the date of medical and background checks

The Express Entry system has several advantages:

  • Efficiency: Express Entry has significantly reduced processing times for permanent residency applications. Most applications are processed within six months or less.
  • Merit-Based Selection: It prioritizes candidates with skills, education, and work experience that are in demand in the Canadian labor market, ensuring that newcomers contribute to Canada’s economic growth.
  • Transparency: The CRS score and regular draws make the selection process transparent and predictable.
  • Flexibility: Express Entry candidates can improve their CRS scores over time by enhancing their qualifications, language proficiency, or obtaining a job offer or provincial nomination.

The Express Entry system has become a popular pathway for skilled workers and professionals seeking to become permanent residents in Canada due to its efficiency and fairness in selecting candidates who can contribute to the country’s economic prosperity.
