Analysis: Canada’s immigration creates ‘mirage’ of economic prosperity, economists say
Reuters, OTTAWA, July 26 – By stepping up immigration, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has driven economic development and filled labour market gaps, but new immigrants are now placing a burden on public services and adding to an overheating economy, according to experts.
With an estimated 2.5 million new permanent residents since entering office in 2015, Trudeau has increased the population to above 40 million.
According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s population grew at its quickest rate since 1957 last year, placing it among the top 20 fastest growing nations in the world. This helped to partially offset the effects of an ageing population that is retiring and driving up healthcare expenditures.
