What is the difference between permanent residence and citizenship?

Permanent residence is the legal status of a foreign national in Canada. It allows them to reside and work in Canada, but they do not have the same rights as Canadian citizens. Citizenship is the highest status of belonging to a country. Canadian citizens have the right to vote, work and travel in Canada, and can apply for a Canadian passport.
