Mass immigration experiment gives Canada an edge in global race for labor
Canada is in the forefront of countries that are relying on immigration to prevent economic collapse at a time when industrialised nations across the globe are dealing with declining birth rates and ageing workforces.
More people have moved into a country about the size of California in the past year than there are people living in San Francisco. Canada’s population topped 40 million for the first time ever last week, and growth is only predicted to pick up speed as more immigrants, refugees, and international students enter the country.
The huge immigration experiment is a method for the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to expand the labour market as the global competition for talented workers heats up. It also underscores Canada’s longer-term goal to increase its global influence and step out from under the shadow of the US, which is geographically close to it but has approximately eight times as many people and over 12 times as much GDP.
